9 Night Cruise sailing from Oban to Invergordon aboard Hebridean Princess.
Lighthouse interest cruise.
Lighthouses are important features on the coastal landscape, performing a vital role in the safety of mariners in all weathers. Most of the lighthouses in Scotland today were designed and built by four generations of one family - the Stevensons. This cruise is a pharologists delight, following in the footsteps of the lighthouse keepers.
Steaming from Oban we land on the most westerly point of the British mainland, Ardnamurchan, to wonder at the 55 metre tall lighthouse, established in 1849 by Alan Stevenson. Visit the Skerryvore Lighthouse Museum on Tiree, to find out how the heroic engineers and keepers built and maintained Scotland's tallest lighthouse, on a dangerous rock over 10 nautical miles out to sea.
Tick off numerous beacons as we sail north to Gairloch and the local heritage museum, before stepping ashore on the Sutherland coast to wonder at the natural beauty of Smoo Cave, and rounding Cape Wrath on passage to Orkney.
Explore the prehistoric village of Skara Brae en route to the northernmost island in Orkney, South Ronaldsay, site of the highest land based lighthouse in the British Isles. The beacon at Start Point on Sanday was the first lighthouse in Scotland to have a revolving light and is painted with black and white vertical stripes to make it a recognisable day mark.
Returning to the mainland, we pause at the former Viking settlement of Wick en route to Fraserburgh where the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses tells the great story of the Northern Lighthouse Board, the engineers who built the lights and the keepers who tended them. |
