Cruise Description |
9 Night Cruise sailing from Invergordon roundtrip aboard Hebridean Princess.
Guest speaker cruise.
Discover the far-flung islands of Orkney and Shetland, as Hebridean Princess sails where the Norse once ruled. These contrasting archipelagos boast some of the finest Neolithic sites in Britain and both played vital roles during WWII. Havens for wildlife, they host a trove of hidden treasures waiting to be explored.
Visit the Italian Chapel, a Roman Catholic chapel in Lamb Holm which was constructed by Italian POWs during the WWII. The sinking of HMS Royal Oak in 1939 prompted Winston Churchill to order the building of the Churchill Barriers to protect the naval anchorage of Scapa Flow.
Uncovered by a storm in 1850, the neolithic settlement of Skara Brae gives a remarkable picture of life 5,000 years ago. Perhaps the finest rock arch in Orkney, the Vat of Kirbister is the jewel in Stronsay's crown.
Fair Isle provides a stooping stone on our voyage north, an irresistible haven for birds and wild flowers, ahead of our first Shetland port of call, Burravoe, whose war time history is illustrated at the Old Haa Museum. In contrast, the SaxaVord Spaceport is the northernmost launch site in the UK for commercial rockets.
The Hanseatic Booth Museum depicts the story of the Hansa German merchant traders who came to Whalsay in the 16th century. The nearby heritage centre preserves the culture and traditions of the island and offers seasonal exhibitions. Onwards to Lerwick to marvel at over 4,000 years of human settlement at Jarlshof before observing the cliffs at Sumburgh Head, teeming with pairs of breeding seabirds.
Shetland Museum tells the fascinating story of the island's history and heritage before we return to Orkney and enjoy walks with a local ranger on Papa Westray. Passing the Kitchener Memorial and Old Man of Hoy, our adventure concludes in Wick. |
