Castles & Gardens Interest Cruise

From clan seats to royal residences, Scotland has no shortage of stunning and romantic castles and the Highlands is home to many. Picturesquely situated and full of history, many are also complemented by extensive gardens, full of diverse plant collections.

An Cala is a small mid-20th-century plantsman's garden created on steep ground with views over an island-studded seascape, comprising formal terraces, a terraced rose garden enclosed by yew hedges, streamside plantings and woodland gardens. Explore the island capital of Tobermory on Mull where colourful houses line the harbour.

From Craignure we travel to the sacred Isle of Iona, the last resting place of some 50 Scottish kings where St Columba introduced Christianity to Scotland in 563AD. The restored Benedictine Abbey offers peaceful tranquillity before we discover the Maclean stronghold of Duart Castle with its 700 years of clan history. Walk the battlements and lose yourself in the breathtaking views looking out across the Sound of Mull.

Today we sail Loch Linnhe, passing mysterious lochs and islands until we reach Corpach, and the 28 acre woodland garden at Larachmhor, abundant with colourful rhododendrons and other exotic shrubs. We spend the day relaxing on board as we ascend Neptune’s Staircase and sail the tranquil waters of the Caledonian Canal to Fort August.

Entering Loch Ness, we pass the romantic ruins of Urquhart Castle, en route to Inverness where the delights of Cawdor Castle await. Forever immortalised in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the 14th century home of the Thanes of Cawdor boasts three very different gardens, each with their own unique history and appearance.
