Nature & Wildlife Interest Cruise with Guest Speaker
Scotland’s land, seas and skies support a wide range of native mammals and birds and is renowned as a wildlife destination. The great wilderness of northern Scotland which abounds with white beaches, turquoise waters and a rugged coastline, is a treasure trove of species including whales, dolphins, seals, white-tailed eagles and seabirds.
Cruise out to Chanonry Point in the Moray Firth, home to around 200 dolphins which can often be seen at very close quarters, before sailing the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness to Fort Augustus where we berth overnight.
Binoculars at the ready to spot birds of prey, red deer, herons and other wading birds as we sail the tranquil waters of the Caledonian Canal and descend the series of eight locks of Neptune’s Staircase. Later we take the Glenfinnan Viaduct Trail which passes through a range of habitats; keep an eye out for otter, dippers, red deer and raptors.
From Tobermory we take a small boat to the tiny Isle of Lunga in the Treshnish Isles to see the island’s famous colonies of puffins. Lunga is also a popular habitat to an ever-increasing number of guillemot, razorbill, kittiwake, fulmar, shag, great skua and a seal colony. On Coll, a local ranger leads a wildlife walk to explore the outstanding wildlife and natural beauty of this picturesque bird haven, fringed by silver sand beaches.
Known as ‘eagle island’, Mull is home to white-tailed sea eagles and golden eagles and we go in search of these magnificent birds of prey. Finally, from Oban, we take a small boat trip round the north end of Kerrera to visit seals on their private island.
